Please call Stella. Ask her to bring these things with her from the store: Six spoons of fresh snow peas, five thick slabs of blue cheese, and maybe a snack for her brother Bob. We also need a small plastic snake and a big toy frog for the kids. She can scoop these things into three red bags, and we will go meet her Wednesday at the train station.

I stumbled upon this wonderful speech archive which contains speech samples from people of many nationalities and ages, all reading the same text. I thought it might be fun to do something similar here in SU. Record your own sample reading of the text and add it here - in English, or, if you prefer (and equally fun) in your own preferred language.

It's pretty simple really, record your reading of the text and share it with the rest of SU. If you want to. The more the merrier.

The only potential complications I see are in i) recording it and ii) sharing it. I can offer some help on both counts.

i) Recording it:

You need a microphone on your PC. Some webcams have them built in - as do many laptops. But the bottom line is that you need a PC which has a working microphone attached to it, or a microphone that can be attached to it! If you have neither, you are going to *have* to beg, borrow, steal or get access to a PC with a working microphone.

You need some recording software: there are plenty of great applications about, but someone pointed me at Audacity, and it does what it says on the box - it records to WAV or MP3 - the latter is good for this purpose because a) it is a smaller file and b) it's easily played back. If you use Actuality, you will also need one other file to record to MP3, but if you google for "lame_enc.dll" and save the file to your desktop you can simply introduce it to Audacity when it asks. C'est ca.

ii) Sharing it:

If you want to share a file on the web, it has to be hosted on the web so that you can link to it. Mr-Helpful can tell you more about how to do this.

If you have your own web-space, you probably know all about this stuff, but if you don't you are going to need to get someone to help by hosting your file for you. I can do it, and others will surely offer if this idea grows enough to warrant it. If you need help hosting your file, message me. If I get stuck for space, I'll enlist some other helpers or create a web page just for this little project.

OK? Ok!
