 Staff | CH | Sep 12, 2007 5:07am | That I applaud MJ-B's stance should not be construed as a criticism of another's. ;o)
An enquiring mind is a wonderful gift, and I delight in seeing others use theirs. What I find disappointing is when others feel it necessarily to comment cruelly on something which does not meet their own criteria of "this is good". Whilst not exactly a rule to live by, I think that the motto "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" is a good one to consider (before hitting the keys). [Where "nice" might also be read as "positive", "constructive", etc.]
I do find (the pages that are solely) photoblogs to be disappointing at times, because I enjoy variety. But I also realise that if it were not for the pages that I personally consider to be "not quite so good", then I would have no means of judging those which I consider to be "drop-dead gorgeous".
Were we to have the means of hosting "readers pictures", then I think that there might be some mileage in a "personal gallery" or somesuch. On the other hand, with services like Flickr so readily available, I would personally advise that these tools do the job blindingly well, and that a link to "see more of my stuff" is the best way to go.
However, each to their own. SU is about nothing if not about variety. |

seems like the longer i'm on SU, the thicker my skin gets. ;)
(no, really, i kid.)
"What I find disappointing is when others feel it necessarily to comment cruelly on something which does not meet their own criteria of "this is good"."
well, that is the problem.. there are some self-appointed "experts" out there that seem to enforce these rules with negative reviews. |

If I thumb down someone's page because I don't like what they are doing, that's just me saying "I don't like what they are doing". Doesn't imply I think everyone should be doing it differently, just that I don't like what they are doing.
That's what we're supposed to be doing with our thumbs, after all: expressing our own likes and dislikes. |

as to the photoblog thing, some are better than others, like any other blog. I initially did rather a lot of it until I felt more comfortable making my own opinions known in print, as it were. a good photoblogger is a great source of arty sites and food for the soul. likewise music bloggers. depends what does it for you... |

| mrstarstuff | Mar 19, 3:39am | Excuse me for resurrecting a 6 mo.old topic, but I just discovered this group and have some opinions about photoblogging and the use of SU pages in general. In fact, I did a "commentary" about it on my page probably a year ago and caught some flack from a few offended parties.
What I don't like to see is SU pages with no thumbs. These are not necessarily "photoblogs", they may also be all poetry, usually combined with sparkly faries, angels or flowers; or all opinion statements. In other words, their content would be just fine for a personal blog, not part of SU. Why?
Because SU has a mission unique to SU, and that is to find and/or rate web sites. If we use our entire blog for other purposes, then we might as well be Facebook or any social site. I don't thumb every post. I have cartoons, statements, some images, etc. that are just blogged. But, totally ignoring stumbling will get no "thumbs up" from me.
As to photoblogging: it irritates me to see one image after another with no credit or link. If you are an art lover and you want to post images from artists sites, galleries or where ever you find them, you will probably violate copy write laws anyway(I do), but you should at least credit the artist and link to the page where it's located. In most(not all) cases, the site/page can be 'rated' and thumbed. I do that everywhere possible. I never copy an image from another stumbler, instead, I follow a link and copy from the source.
There are great SU blogs that are all content(ex:inga and lerryn) and some that are mostly images(for ex: hhj and lariava), but they all fulfill the SU mission. Those that don't,IMHO, should go get a blog somewhere else.

Excuse me?

Thumbing down other Stumblers is anti-community. Community is eclectic.
SU is about the best of the web - this can only be a subjective assessment.
I have no right to deny another's judgement and nor does *anybody else*
---
SU is is now an official blogging place, blogging is personal - so blog personally (but please make it the best - in your perview)

Unless a Stumbler includes absolutely nothing gleaned from the web, the "mission" as MrStarStuff percieves it is always fulfilled.
(13 - second bite)
Except in very extreme cases the down-thumb never should be used against other Stumblers because all that does is criticise taste and attempt to impose an individual's personal idea of taste upon another. Communities that succeed (everywhere) are either monolithic or eclectic. I'm here because SU is the latter. Don't like what someone does? Pass by without comment (in extemis excepted - ie illegal or spam-source or an abuser of other Stumblers).

Agreed - a good rule to live by. |

| mrstarstuff | May 15, 2:36am | *I don't "thumbs down" a Stumbler, if I don't like their pages, I move on without giving a "thumbs up".
* SU was set up with a "stumble button" and "thumbs" for rating sites. Facebook, and personal blogs don't have any such thing. If the basic unique purpose of SU has been changed, I'm not aware of it.
* You just admitted that, "Unless a Stumbler includes absolutely nothing gleaned from the web, the "mission" as MrStarStuff percieves it is always fulfilled." Which is exactly what I said.."But, totally ignoring stumbling will get no "thumbs up" from me." |
