Who remembers the last interface change?

I was digging through my screenshots from the 'pre-classic' SU interface when the relevant thread was locked. In any case I found a pic, but since I'm posting in Culture now, I've attached some ranting about curvy tabs.

I largely want to ditto DSC501 in (83, above thread) and say that beta seems roughly usability equivalent (or perhaps better) from a new user perspective. Which is vital for a growth site like SU.

I also remember the last major interface update back in 2004; unfortunately the forums have reset since then so I can't link to discussions. Most people were opposed to the change, but it was definitely for the best. Check out my old profile; everything in on one page: (click for fullsize)

That said, (11) is still my aesthetic opinion: The classic interface made boxy work, made it stylish, and I although I don't hate every curved line in the beta there are a couple things I find glaring.

(rant)

1) Looks at the top of this page. Oh joy: tabs. Curvy tabs. Very curvy tabs. Very curvy tabs that are translucent and blur into the background. To say nothing that this is a misappropriation of the tab visual metaphor. Bonus point: No 'forum' tab exists, let alone is highlighted. Please, just look at these tabs and join me in a moment of silence.

2) Let's go to my profile. Up at the top: Joy, more very curvy tabs. But whatever. At least they're the same choices as in the forum, and the same size / curvature. Except the highlighted one, which inexplicably feels the need to both expand in size and adopt a gradient; either one would be sufficient. 'Classic' sidesteps this with a minimalist visual abstraction of the tab model which requires no images. Mm. So boxy. :)

3) Moving down from the top of my profile we see a new, distinct curvature in play. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's a little glaring on the right-hand side where the box containing (# messages, #visitors) uses the large curve and the menu items directly below use the small curve. Why? It looks designed by committee. The whole right-hand column seems designed by committee. I don't think it needs to be thrown out though, just re-worked.

I suppose it could be worse.

you have a good point. I use Windows Classic rather than the curved XP style, so beta with right angles and straight edges would be fabulous. I wonder if SU could do a similar skinning?

Thanks for sharing these fascinating screenshots of the truly "classic" SU.

I was nice if we could have the "classic look" option (and I don't understand why "audience" numbers are gone)

Oh, that was fun... seeing those screenshots, disco.
I'd forgotten what it looked like!
That clover symbol is real old, isn't it?

I think I'm not missing the classic look so much anymore. I've pretty much forgotten it.

But, like I've said before, I do miss the zen feeling it had.
